Caring for Your Chasen
Clean after each use
Rinse your chasen thoroughly with water after whisking.
Dry properly
Store it in the open air to allow it to dry completely. For best results, place it tips-down on a whisk stand to help maintain its shape.
Avoid the storage case
Each chasen arrives in a protective case, but this is only for shipping. Keeping it in the case may trap moisture and cause mold.
Don’t worry about small cracks
Over time, the handle of your chasen may develop a small crack due to natural changes in humidity. This is normal. The thread at the base of the prongs prevents the crack from spreading, so the whisk remains perfectly usable. In fact, many of the chasen we use daily in our tearooms have small cracks — and they still perform beautifully.
Tips to keep your Chasen in optimal condition
Before Whisking
Soak the whisk in water for 1–2 minutes to soften the tips and prevent brittleness.
After Use
Rinse gently with water (no soap). Remove any matcha powder that may be stuck between the prongs.
Drying
Allow the whisk to dry in open air. Avoid placing it back in the case, as this can trap moisture and cause mold.
Storing
Use a whisk stand (chasen-tate) to help it keep its shape as it dries.
Note Replace the chasen when the tips are broken. Only use with water and matcha. For lattes, add milk (or alternative) after whisking.
